Pontassieve is located on the right bank of the river Arno, at the confluence with Sieve River. The first evidence of settlements at Pontassieve dates back to Medieval times, when the Florentine Republic built the Castle of St. Angelo on the road linking Romagna to Casentino. The symbol of Pontassieve then became the Medicean bridge (ponte in Italian) on the River Sieve, which gave the name to the town. The town is located at the feet of Appennino tosco-emiliano and is part of the mountainous area known as Montagna Fiorentina. The area is covered by thick woodland rich in fauna and flora, including some rare species of flowers. Pontassieve is just 11km to Florence and its Renaissance treasures, and a short distance to beautiful Fiesole, a town of Etruscan origins enjoying spectacular views of the town of Florence at its feet.
