Great Choice of Accommodation in Italy

TUSCANY, Arezzo , Cortona

The quiet town of Cortona with its girdle of medieval ramparts, clings to the steep slopes of a hill covered with olive trees. It affords lovely views of the surrounding countryside as far as Lake Trasimeno. Evidence of the first settlements dates back to the Etruscan times, and in the area there are many archeological sites of the Etruscan period. To be mentioned the so-called Tomb of Pythagoras, a short distance westwards, a  4C circular sepulchre.  The Museum of the Etruscan Academy groups Etruscan, Roman, Egyptian, medieval and Renaissance items. Among the Etruscan objects, to be noted a curious 5C BC bronze oil lamp, with sixteen burners in the human form.  During the Renaissance period Cortona attracted many artists, including the Sienese Fra Angelico, who embellished the town with their art treasures. Cortona is  also the birth place of Luca Signorelli, who was the precursor of Michelangelo. Domenico Bernabei  Il Boccadoro (Mouth of Gold), who designed Paris Hotel de Ville for Francois I in the 16C , was also from Cortona.
