Bergamo is a fascinating town characterized by the division into two levels, the lower city, which is modern and dynamic, and the famous Città Alta, a historical and artistic gem. The heart of the town is the scenic Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful Renaissance square delimited by Palazzo della Ragione, the symbol of the medieval Commune. Also accessible from this square is Torre Civica (Campanone), which affords a great view over the surrounding countryside. The adjacent square, Piazza Duomo, is a small and quiet square with some beautiful buildings such as Basilica di Santa Maria maggiore (XIIth c), the Cathedral of St. Alessandro, the patron saint, and the Chapel Colleoni (XVth c.), mausoleum of Bartolomeo Colleoni, well-known leader of mercenaries. In the large region of the lakes, the area of Bergamo boasts two scenic basins. The small Lake Endine, a real oasis of wild life surrounded by beds of reeds and woodland, and the beautiful Lake Iseo, well known for boat trips, water sports and picturesque lakeshore villages.
