Vernazza is considered one of the most picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre. Its medieval origins are still visible in the ancient arcades, churches, and house-towers. The castle that protect the small harbor dates back to eleventh century. The city centre consists of a main street from with narrow and steep side staircases called arpaie. The main historical monument is Chiesa di Santa Margherita di Antiochia, a Church is Roman-Genoese style which dates back to the thirteenth century. The villages of Cinque Terre can be reached by train or by ferry from La Spezia, Portovenere, or other Italian Riviera villages. There are popular hiking trails between the villages as well as in the scenic hills above them.
