EMILIA-ROMAGNA, Bologna , Dozza

Dozza  is considered one the most picturesque medieval towns of the Apennines, thanks to its well preserved historical centre and to the landscaped surrounding countryside, with gentle hills covered with vineyards. Its medieval historical centre is towered by an ancient fortress built by the Sforza family.  The interiors, which are open to visitors, boast elegant rooms with ancient furnishing and precious paintings and tapestry dating back to the eighteenth century. The Weapons Hall is also viewable together with the ancient prisons (with original instruments of torture, including a legendary trapdoor opening into a well with sharp blades. The cellars of the fortress houses the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia-Romagna, a winebar with more than 200 labels of wine, balsamic vinegar, and distillates. Dozza is made unique thanks to the frescoes embellishing the façades of  its houses. The main attraction of Dozza is a special event called Biennale del Muro Dipinto (first celebrated in 1965). Every two years famous artists on national and international scale gather in town and accomplish permanent works on the walls of the houses, making of the historical centre a real open air art gallery.
